Fanuc spindle alarm 56 means the cooling fan for the spindle amplifier's control circuit section has stopped — the small internal fan that keeps the control electronics cool, distinct from the heat-sink/radiator fan behind AL-09. It completes the fan-alarm family across the amplifier rack: SVM alarm F on servo units, PSM alarms 2/A on the power supply — and AL-56 on the spindle amplifier. Fanuc lists only two causes, and the order is deliberate.

Cause 1 — The control board is not seated (check this FIRST)

Fanuc's own first cause is not the fan: poor installation of the control printed-circuit board. The fan's power and rotation-sense signals cross the board-to-board connectors between the control PCB and power PCB — a faceplate not pushed fully home, or a connector detached during previous work, reports a ‘stopped’ fan that is actually spinning (or genuinely stops a healthy fan by cutting its supply).

  1. Power OFF, lock out, wait for the charge LED to go out.
  2. Push the faceplate as far as it will go. Check no board-to-board connector is half-seated — especially if the amplifier was recently repaired, transported, or had boards swapped.
  3. Power on and re-check. This zero-cost step closes a real share of AL-56 cases — which is exactly why Fanuc lists it first.

Cause 2 — The fan itself

Faceplate seated, alarm persists → the internal control-circuit fan has genuinely stopped:

  1. Look and listen (fan location: the small cassette in the top of the SPM on most αi models). Not spinning, twitching, or rattling = confirmed. The usual killer in Indian shops: oil-laden dust matting the blades solid.
  2. Clean first, replace anyway: blowing it out may revive it, but a fan that stalled once has cooked bearings/windings — schedule the replacement; it will strand you again at the worst time.
  3. Replace with the genuine-spec fan unit for your amplifier model — the recurring warning from this series applies: the amplifier monitors rotation through a sense wire, so a generic two-wire fan reads as ‘stopped’ at full speed and the alarm never clears.
  4. Fanuc's remedy ‘replace the Spindle Amplifier or its internal cooling fan’ — the fan is the serviceable part; the amplifier only needs to go to the bench if a genuine fan doesn't clear the alarm (failed fan-drive/sense circuit on the board — a routine component-level repair).
Tip: Same rule as every fan alarm in the rack: fans are 3–5-year consumables in a dusty shop, and they share the same air. When the SPM's control fan dies, inspect the PSM and SVM fans and the cabinet filters the same day — one planned session beats three breakdowns. And do not run production ‘just to finish the shift’ with a dead control-circuit fan: the control board cooking above it is what turns a ₹-fan into an amplifier repair.

Diagnosis checklist (in order)

  1. Reseat the control-board faceplate fully (power off) — Fanuc's cause (a).
  2. Persists → observe the fan: stalled/dusty → clean, then replace with the genuine-spec unit.
  3. Genuine fan fitted, alarm still on → fan power/sense circuit on the board → bench repair or exchange.
  4. While in there: check every fan in the rack and the cabinet filters.
