Fanuc spindle alarm 71 occurs only with Dual Check Safety in use, and means a safety parameter error was detected — the safety-related parameter data failed its integrity/consistency check. Dual Check Safety keeps safety parameters (safe speeds, monitoring settings) under redundant supervision; if the stored data is corrupt, inconsistent between channels, or invalid, the machine refuses to trust its own safety limits and stops with AL-71.

Fanuc's two steps, expanded

  1. Re-set the safety parameters. Reload/re-enter the safety parameter set from the machine's documented, builder-approved values — the machine's own verified backup or the builder's commissioning sheet. Follow the control's safety-parameter setting procedure (these parameters typically require the safety password/procedure and a confirmation sequence, not plain PWE). After re-setting, the control usually demands a power cycle and re-confirmation of the safety data.
    • Where the corruption comes from: an interrupted parameter restore, a battery/memory event (check for companion memory alarms and see our battery guide), or a restore from a different machine — safety parameters are machine-specific and must never be copied from a sister machine.
  2. Replace the CPU card or the amplifier control PCB — if correctly re-set parameters will not hold or the alarm returns, the memory holding them is failing on one side of the redundant pair. Board-level repair or exact-spec exchange, then a verified safety-function test before the machine returns to production.
Tip: Treat the safety parameter set like a certificate, not a config file: keep a verified copy with the machine documents, record who set it and when, and never hand-type values from memory. AL-71 that recurs after a clean re-set is hardware — stop re-setting and repair the board; a safety system that keeps losing its parameters is telling you its memory is dying.
