Fanuc spindle alarm 74 occurs only with Dual Check Safety, and means the CPU test failed to end normally — the safety function's mandatory processor self-test on the spindle amplifier did not complete correctly. Dual Check Safety must prove its own processors are sane before it can be trusted to monitor anything; a CPU test that fails or hangs stops the machine at the gate.
Fanuc's remedy — and the sensible preamble
The manual is one line: replace the Spindle Amplifier or its control printed-circuit board. The self-test failed inside the amplifier's safety processor — there is no cable or parameter to fix. Still, before shipping a unit:
- One clean power cycle — full off, charge LEDs out, on. A brown-out during boot (see AL-10) can abort a self-test spuriously. Once; a repeat is real.
- Reseat the control-board faceplate (power off, locked out) — the recurring half-seated-connector cause across this alarm family.
- Check the alarm history — AL-74 arriving with siblings (AL-16 RAM, AL-75 CRC, AL-13) confirms a genuinely failing control board rather than a one-off.
The repair, done properly
Board-level repair of the control PCB (processor environment: RAM, regulators, oscillator, aged joints) or an exact-specification exchange — model and software series/edition matched, or you trade AL-74 for configuration alarms (AL-14/AL-70). Because the failed test belongs to the safety chain, acceptance is a verified safety-function test — documented, not assumed.
