Unplanned CNC machine breakdowns are one of the biggest causes of production loss in manufacturing. A structured Preventive Maintenance (PM) program can dramatically reduce breakdowns, extend machine life, and lower your overall maintenance costs.

Here is a comprehensive CNC machine preventive maintenance checklist used by our engineers at JJ Automation.

Daily Checks

  • Check lubrication oil level in the slideway lubrication unit
  • Check coolant level and concentration
  • Clean chips and swarf from the machine bed, turret, and spindle area
  • Check for any unusual noise or vibration during operation
  • Check spindle warm-up cycle is being followed
  • Verify all axis movements are smooth with no jerking or hesitation
  • Check air pressure at the pneumatic unit (if applicable)

Weekly Checks

  • Clean the CNC control panel and operator interface
  • Check and clean the servo drive and spindle drive cooling fans
  • Inspect coolant filter and replace if clogged
  • Check all limit switches and home position sensors
  • Lubricate ball screws and linear guides manually (if auto-lube is not fitted)
  • Check hydraulic oil level (if applicable)

Monthly Checks

  • Check tightness of all electrical connections in the control panel
  • Inspect servo motor and spindle motor for bearing noise or vibration
  • Check encoder cables for damage, chafing, or loose connectors
  • Clean the CNC control panel interior — remove dust from PCBs and fans
  • Check axis backlash and adjust if necessary
  • Inspect the spindle taper for damage or wear
  • Test all alarms and safety interlocks

Quarterly Checks

  • Replace slideway lubrication oil filter
  • Check spindle belt tension and condition (replace if worn)
  • Inspect all pneumatic and hydraulic seals for leaks
  • Check the CNC battery voltage (replace if below 3V — Fanuc A98L-0031-0025)
  • Back up all CNC parameters, programs, and tool data
  • Check tool changer operation — lubricate as required

Annual Checks

  • Replace CNC battery (Fanuc A98L-0031-0025)
  • Replace servo drive and spindle drive cooling fans
  • Replace coolant and clean the coolant tank
  • Full geometric accuracy check — levelling, squareness, and positioning
  • Inspect all PCBs and control cards for corrosion or burnt components
  • Check and recalibrate all axis drives and current limits
  • Inspect spindle motor brushes (if brush-type motor)
