Siemens SINAMICS drives are widely used in CNC machines, automation systems, and industrial equipment across India. When a SINAMICS drive displays a fault or alarm, production stops. This guide covers the most common SINAMICS fault codes and how to resolve them quickly.

Understanding SINAMICS Faults vs Alarms

Siemens SINAMICS uses two types of messages:

  • Faults (Fxxxxx): Critical errors that cause the drive to trip and stop. The drive must be reset after the fault is cleared.
  • Alarms (Axxxxx): Warnings that indicate a potential problem. The drive continues to run but the issue should be investigated.

Most Common SINAMICS Fault Codes

Fault F30001 — Overcurrent

Cause: The drive output current has exceeded the maximum limit. Usually caused by a short circuit in the motor windings, incorrect motor data, or a mechanical overload.

Fix: Check motor insulation resistance (megger test). Verify motor data parameters match the nameplate. Check for mechanical binding on the driven axis. Inspect the drive output cable for insulation damage.

Fault F30002 — DC Link Overvoltage

Cause: The DC bus voltage has exceeded the safe limit. Usually caused by excessive regenerative energy, a faulty braking resistor, or incorrect supply voltage.

Fix: Check the braking resistor (SINAMICS Line Reactor). Verify the supply voltage is within specification. Check the drive's DC link voltage parameter settings.

Fault F30003 — DC Link Undervoltage

Cause: DC bus voltage has fallen below the minimum threshold. Usually caused by a power supply problem or a failing drive supply section.

Fix: Check incoming AC supply voltage and all fuses. Inspect the SINAMICS Line Module (Basic Line Module or Smart Line Module) for faults. Replace the Line Module if necessary.

Fault F30004 — Drive Overtemperature

Cause: The drive heatsink temperature has exceeded the safe limit. Usually caused by a blocked or failed cooling fan, inadequate ventilation, or an overloaded drive.

Fix: Check and replace the drive cooling fan. Ensure adequate clearance around the drive for ventilation. Check the ambient temperature of the control cabinet.

Fault F30021 — Ground Fault

Cause: A ground fault has been detected in the motor or output cables. Usually caused by damaged motor insulation or a damaged output cable.

Fix: Disconnect the motor and test insulation resistance. Inspect the output cable for damage. Replace the motor or cable if a fault is confirmed.

Fault F01040 — Parameter Error

Cause: Drive parameters are incorrect or have been corrupted.

Fix: Perform a factory reset and recommission the drive. Restore parameters from a backup if available.

Common SINAMICS Alarm Codes

Alarm A05000 — Overtemperature Warning

The drive is approaching its thermal limit. Improve ventilation and check the cooling fan before it trips on Fault F30004.

Alarm A07012 — Line Voltage Fluctuation

Supply voltage is fluctuating. Check the incoming power supply and SINAMICS Line Filter or Line Reactor.
