Fanuc spindle alarm 32 means the LSI memory used for serial communication is abnormal — the memory chip that buffers the serial-spindle data exchange between CNC and amplifier failed its check. Like the other self-test codes, the check runs at power-on, so AL-32 greets you at machine start rather than appearing mid-cut. Fanuc's remedy is one line — replace the amplifier or its control PCB — but as with every board-level alarm in this series, a few minutes of due diligence first saves condemning a good unit.

How AL-32 differs from its neighbours

  • AL-24 = the serial link corrupted data in transit — usually cabling and noise, fixable in the cabinet.
  • AL-32 = the communication hardware inside the amplifier failed its memory test — a genuine board fault. Cables and routing will not fix it.
  • AL-13 = the CPU's own RAM — same family, different chip.

Before condemning the board (10 minutes)

  1. One clean power cycle: full power off, wait for the charge LEDs to extinguish, power on. A brown-out during boot (see AL-10) can fail a memory self-test spuriously. Once — if it returns, it is real.
  2. Reseat the control board faceplate (power off, locked out): a half-seated board-to-board connector has mimicked several self-test alarms in this series.
  3. Check the alarm history for companions: AL-32 together with AL-10/control-power symptoms points at a sagging internal supply corrupting the memory rather than a dead chip — a different (and simpler) repair.

The repair

Recurring AL-32 = control PCB fault: the communication LSI/memory or its local supply has failed. Options, honestly ranked:

  • Board-level repair — the economical route: the failed device is identified and replaced on the bench, and the board is verified in a live amplifier under communication load. Considerably cheaper than a new amplifier.
  • Correct-specification replacement control board — exact model and software series/edition, or you trade AL-32 for AL-14 (the mixed-board mismatch).
  • Exchange amplifier — the fast path when the machine is down and every hour counts.
Tip: Record the amplifier's full A06B number and software series/edition before it leaves the machine — the only way to verify a returned or replacement board matches. And if AL-32 appeared right after an electrical storm or a plant power event, have the control supply rails checked too: memory chips are often the first casualty of a surge, but rarely the only one.

Diagnosis checklist (in order)

  1. One clean power cycle — rule out a marginal boot.
  2. Reseat the control-board faceplate.
  3. Check alarm history for control-power companions (AL-10).
  4. Persists → control PCB repair or exact-spec replacement; exchange unit if production is waiting.
