Fanuc spindle alarm 34 means parameter data outside the specifiable range was set — one of the spindle parameters holds a value the drive software refuses to accept. The spindle keeps its dignity: it will not run on nonsense data. AL-34 virtually never appears on an untouched machine — it follows parameter edits, a restore from backup (especially another machine's), amplifier or motor swaps, or commissioning work. The question is never ‘is a parameter wrong’ but ‘which one’ — and Fanuc provides a precise way to find out.

Finding the offending parameter

  1. The spindle check board method (Fanuc's official route): with the check board connected, the display alternates between ‘AL-34’ and ‘F-xxx’ — the F-number identifies the out-of-range parameter. The F-xxx ↔ CNC parameter number correspondence is tabulated in the AC Spindle Motor αi Parameter Manual (B-65280EN). If you have the check board, this turns a hunt into a lookup.
  2. No check board? Work by history: AL-34 appeared immediately after specific work — diff what changed:
    • After a manual edit → the parameter you just touched (or its neighbour — a slipped digit on the wrong line is classic).
    • After a restore → compare the loaded file against the machine's known-good backup; a file from a different machine/software edition plants out-of-range values wholesale (see our wrong-data guide).
    • After a motor/amplifier change → re-enter the motor model code (parameter 4133) and let the control auto-load the motor-specific set — stale values from the old motor are frequent offenders.

Fixing it

  1. Enable parameter writing (PWE).
  2. Set the identified parameter to a documented in-range value — from the machine's own backup, the builder's parameter sheet, or the B-65280EN specification. Do not guess a plausible-looking number: an in-range-but-wrong value clears AL-34 and then misbehaves at speed, which is a worse failure mode than an honest alarm.
  3. PWE off, power cycle, confirm the alarm is gone — then test orientation and (if used) rigid tapping before production, since spindle parameter errors show up there first.
Tip: AL-34 is actually the friendly outcome of bad parameter work — the drive caught it at the door. The dangerous outcome is data that is in-range but wrong for this machine, which loads silently.   1. What changed just before AL-34? Edit / restore / hardware swap.
  2. Check board available → read the F-xxx number, look it up in B-65280EN.
  3. No check board → diff against the known-good backup; after motor swaps re-enter 4133.
  4. Correct with documented values only; PWE off; power cycle.
  5. Verify orientation and rigid tapping before releasing to production.
