Fanuc spindle alarm 66 means an error occurred in the communication on the JX4 connector between spindle (amplifier) units — the inter-amplifier link used on multi-spindle configurations (main + sub spindle, differential control, amplifier-to-amplifier signal sharing). Fanuc's troubleshooting is two lines — check the connection, replace the cable — which reflects reality: this is a cable-and-connector alarm first, last, and almost always.

Step 1 — The connection

  1. Power OFF, lock out, charge LEDs out.
  2. Locate the JX4 connectors on both amplifiers and reseat the link cable firmly at both ends — half-seated plugs after cabinet work are the classic cause. Check the latch actually engages.
  3. Inspect the pins: bent, pushed-back, corroded, or coolant-wetted contacts.
  4. Walk the cable's route between the two units: crush points, rub-through against cabinet edges, oil-degraded jacket — and confirm it is not freshly cable-tied against a motor power lead (the same noise trap as every signal cable in this series — see AL-24).

Step 2 — Replace the cable

If reseating and inspection don't clear it, replace the JX4 cable with the correct Fanuc-spec part — don't repair a data cable, and don't substitute a generic lead: pinout and shielding matter. Wiggle-test wisdom applies: an alarm that flickers when you flex the cable has answered the question already.

Step 3 — If a known-good cable doesn't fix it

Beyond Fanuc's two steps, the remaining suspects are the JX4 interface stages on either amplifier's control board:

  • Swap logic: if a spare cable/second machine allows, determine which end the fault follows.
  • The failing interface is a board-level repair — same class of work as the other communication-stage repairs (AL-32, AL-52/53).
Tip: AL-66 right after maintenance → a disturbed connector, nine times out of ten — reseat before anything else. Intermittent AL-66 during operation → flexing break or noise coupling — wiggle-test and check routing. Constant AL-66 with a new cable → an interface stage — bench territory. On differential-control machines, note that a dead master-coder feed shows as AL-43 instead — the two alarms bracket the same inter-amplifier wiring area, so whichever appears, inspect the whole link loom while you are in there.

Diagnosis checklist (in order)

  1. Reseat the JX4 cable at both amplifiers; inspect pins and latches.
  2. Walk the route: damage, oil, bundling with power leads.
  3. Wiggle-test; replace the cable with Fanuc-spec if in any doubt.
  4. Persists → identify which amplifier's JX4 stage is at fault (swap logic) → board repair or exchange.
