This guide covers removing and replacing the shafted spindle encoder on a Haas 40-taper machine, including the parameter update and belt-tension procedure. Read the safety warnings fully before starting.

Where is the encoder? On a 40-taper machine without a gearbox, the encoder is on the top of the spindle motor. With a gearbox, it is on the bottom of the spindle motor.

Removal

1. Power down safely & access the encoder

  1. Jog the spindle to a position that gives easy access to the spindle motor.
  2. Press [POWER OFF].
  3. Set the main circuit breaker to OFF and lock it with an approved lock and safety tag (LOTO).
  4. Remove the spindle head covers as necessary.
  5. Remove the encoder connector from the encoder.

2. Remove the belt, tensioner & encoder

  1. Loosen the (4) tension bracket screws — enough to move the encoder tension bracket assembly.
  2. Move the encoder tension bracket assembly toward the motor encoder pulley and remove the encoder belt.
  3. Remove the (4) tensioner screws, then remove the encoder tension bracket assembly.
  4. Remove the encoder and encoder screws from the encoder belt tensioner. Note: some encoders use nuts.
  5. Remove the pulley screw, then remove the pulley from the encoder.

Installation

Note: No pulleys are included with a new encoder — transfer the pulley from the old unit.

1. Fit the pulley, encoder & belt

  1. Apply the correct thread-locking compound (Loctite) to the setscrew.
  2. Install the pulley on the new encoder — in the same position on the shaft as on the used encoder — and fit the pulley screw.
  3. Install the encoder and screws on the encoder belt tensioner. (Some use nuts.)
  4. Install the encoder tension bracket assembly and the (4) tensioner screws — hand-tighten only, leaving them loose enough to move the assembly.
  5. Move the encoder toward the motor encoder pulley, fit a new encoder belt on the pulleys, and turn the spindle by hand to align the belt.

2. Connect the adaptor cable

  1. Remove the (3) encoder cover screws and washers, and remove the top of the encoder.
  2. Connect the adaptor cable to the circuit card, then install the encoder cap.
  3. Caution: before tightening the screws, make sure the cable is seated in the slot on the cap to prevent cable damage.
  4. Install the (3) encoder cover screws and washers, then connect the adaptor cable to the encoder connector.
  5. Unlock the main circuit breaker and press [POWER ON].

3. Update parameters & set belt tension

  1. Update the parameter values (refer to the 40/50-Taper Shafted Encoder Installation Aid — confirm the parameters are correct).
  2. Press [ZERO RETURN], then [ALL].
  3. In MDI mode run: S500 M03 ; — this turns the spindle at 500 RPM and lets the spring apply the correct belt tension.
⚠ Caution — belt tension. Make sure belt tension is correct. The maximum radial (side) load for the encoder shaft is 13½ lb (60 N). Too much tension can damage the encoder. Some machines have an automatic belt-tension bracket.
  1. Press [RESET] to stop the spindle, then press [EMERGENCY STOP].
  2. Tighten the (4) tension screws.
