How to Replace a Mitsubishi CNC Battery (M70 / M80 / M700 / M800) — Step-by-Step Guide

A low or dead backup battery is one of the most common — and most dangerous — maintenance events on a Mitsubishi CNC. Replace it the right way and it takes ten minutes. Replace it the wrong way and you can lose your parameters, programs and absolute position data.

When to replace the battery

Replace the backup battery as soon as the control shows a battery caution such as a Z52 / Z53 battery alarm (battery drop caution/warning) on M700/M70/M80 series controls, or on a preventive schedule of roughly every 1–2 years. Do not wait: once the battery is fully exhausted and power is removed, SRAM-backed data can be lost.

What you need

  • The correct replacement battery for your unit — on most Mitsubishi CNC control units this is the Q6BAT lithium battery; MDS-E series servo drive systems use the MR-BAT6V1SET battery unit for encoder backup. Check your unit's manual or the label on the old battery.
  • A recent backup of parameters and programs (see our parameter backup guide below — do this first).
⚠ Golden rule: replace the battery with the control powered ON (machine in a safe state, axes not moving). With power on, the capacitor/power supply maintains the memory while the battery is out. Swapping with power OFF is how data gets lost.

Step-by-step

  1. Back up everything first. Parameters, ladder, programs, tool offsets — to SD card or USB. If the machine has absolute encoders, note your reference/zero data.
  2. Power the control ON and put the machine in a safe idle state (E-stop released is not required; follow your machine builder's guidance).
  3. Locate the battery. On the control unit it is usually behind a small front cover or on the side of the control unit; on MDS-E drive systems the encoder battery unit is mounted on the drive.
  4. Disconnect the old battery connector and remove the battery. Work quickly but calmly — with power on there is no countdown.
  5. Connect the new battery, seat it in the holder and refit the cover.
  6. Confirm the alarm clears. The battery caution should disappear (a power cycle may be needed on some models).
  7. Verify your data — check a few parameters and offsets against your backup.

If the data is already lost

If the machine was left powered off with a dead battery and now shows parameter loss or absolute position lost alarms, do not guess values into the control. Restore from your latest backup, then re-establish zero return. If you have no backup, contact us — we recover and rebuild Mitsubishi parameter sets regularly.
