Most catastrophic CNC downtime we see has the same root cause: no parameter backup. A dead battery, a failed board or an accidental clear — and suddenly a running machine is a paperweight. On Mitsubishi M70/M80 controls, a full backup takes about ten minutes with an SD card. Here is how.
What gets backed up
- NC parameters — axis, spindle, machine configuration
- Machining programs
- Tool offsets & workpiece coordinates
- PLC/ladder data (machine-builder logic)
- SRAM data (a full-image backup where supported)
What you need
- An SD card (front slot on the display unit on most M70/M80 installations; FAT/FAT32 formatted, modest capacity is fine)
- Maintenance-level access on the control (parameter/maintenance password if the builder set one)
Step-by-step (M70/M80)
- Insert the SD card into the card slot on the display unit.
- Press the [Mainte] (Maintenance) function key.
- Open the [Input/Output] (I/O) screen.
- Set Device A to Memory (NC) and Device B to Memory card.
- Select the data type to transfer — parameters, programs, offsets, PLC — and execute the transfer for each. File names such as ALL.PRM (parameters) are typical.
- Repeat until every category you need is on the card.
- Copy the files from the SD card to a PC and keep at least two copies (cloud + local). A backup that lives only in the machine cabinet is not a backup.
When to refresh the backup
- Before every battery replacement
- After any parameter or offset change you want to keep
- On a fixed schedule — quarterly is a good habit
