Mitsubishi MDS alarm 2F means a communication error with the motor side encoder (or the linear scale on linear servo systems) — corrupted data or an interrupted link. Where alarm 18 is the handshake failing at power-up, 2F is the running conversation breaking down — which tilts the suspects toward noise, routing and grounding. Mitsubishi's six steps include two cabinet-wiring checks rarely seen spelled out this clearly.

The six steps, in prose

  1. Jiggle-test the encoder connectors (drive and encoder ends) — loose → install correctly.
  2. Check the cable's routing — Mitsubishi's explicit question: is the encoder cable in the same conduit as the motor power cable, or laid in parallel near it? Noise enters from the power cable → improve the wiring: separate routes, cross at 90°. The same rule as every signal cable, stated by the manufacturer in so many words.
  3. Check the motor's FG (frame ground) wiring — the one-point grounding rule: the motor's FG wire must connect only to the drive unit that drives it — if the motor is also grounded locally on the motor side, a ground loop forms and encoder communication pays the price. Remedy: ground the motor to one point, taking the FG through the drive unit side. This is the step most electricians have never heard of — and it resolves ‘unfixable’ intermittent 2F cases.
  4. Power OFF, meter the encoder cable (and verify it is a shielded cable) — faulty → replace.
  5. Swap-test — alarm follows the drive → repair/replace the drive; stays with the encoder → the encoder.
  6. Ambient environment — temperature, noise, grounding.
Tip: Intermittent 2F that resists connector and cable work is nearly always steps 2–3 — the cable sharing a conduit with power wiring, or a double-grounded motor. Both are wiring-practice faults machines are BORN with: they surface years later when insulation ages and noise margins shrink. Fix the practice, not just the symptom — and check the same two points on neighbouring axes while the cabinet is open.

Diagnosis checklist (in order)

  1. Reseat connectors both ends.
  2. Walk the cable route — out of the power conduit, away from parallel power runs.
  3. Verify one-point grounding: motor FG to the drive unit only.
  4. Meter the (shielded) cable; replace if in doubt.
  5. Swap-test drive vs encoder; repair the guilty side.
  6. Environment last.
