How to Back Up Siemens SINUMERIK 808D / 828D Data — Complete Guide

On Siemens SINUMERIK controls the single most valuable file you can own is the commissioning archive — one file containing machine data, PLC project, drive data and settings. With it, a swapped PPU or a catastrophic failure is a recoverable event. Without it, commissioning starts from zero. Here is how to create one on 808D and 828D.

What you need

• A USB stick (FAT32) in the front USB port of the PPU
• Manufacturer access level password where required (many archive functions need it)

SINUMERIK 808D — create a startup archive

1. Insert the USB stick in the front port.
2. Enter the System operating area (SYSTEM key / system softkey; on 808D ADVANCED via the Shift+System area depending on version).
3. Choose the data archiving / backup function and select Create startup archive.
4. Select the content — include NC data (machine data, setting data), PLC project and drive data for a complete archive.
5. Choose USB as the target and execute. Keep the resulting archive file (.arc) safe on a PC afterwards.

SINUMERIK 828D — create a commissioning archive

1. Insert the USB stick.
2. Open the Setup / Start-up operating area (Menu Select → Setup).
3. Go to the archive function (System data → archives) and choose Create commissioning archive.
4. Tick all components: NC data, PLC data, drive data (SINAMICS), HMI data.
5. Save the archive to USB and copy it to at least two locations off the machine.

When you'll thank yourself

• PPU replacement — restore the archive and the machine is itself again
• Battery/SRAM data loss
• Drive module replacement — drive data restores from the archive
