Fanuc spindle alarm d9 means an error occurred in the inner circuit of the serial sensor itself — the sensor's own electronics report an internal fault. Of the serial-sensor family, this is the most direct: the sensor has diagnosed itself as broken.

Fanuc's remedy

The detection circuit is abnormal — replace the detection circuit (the sensor unit). No cable, parameter or amplifier work fixes a sensor whose internal electronics have failed.

Practical notes

  • Confirm before buying: a marginal supply to the sensor (through the cable) can occasionally masquerade as an internal fault — reseat the connectors and check the cable for damage once. If d9 persists, the sensor is genuinely done.
  • Why serial sensors die: coolant ingress at the cable gland, heat soak (a sensor next to a hot spindle housing), and vibration ageing — the usual environment killers. When replacing, correct whatever let coolant or heat at the old one, or the new sensor inherits the same fate.
  • After replacement: depending on configuration, sensor-related setup (and on BiS synchronous systems, the AMR offset — see AL-90) must be re-established before production.
Tip: If d9 was preceded by weeks of intermittent d3/d4 that shielding work never fixed — that was the sensor's electronics dying by degrees, not your cabling. The alarm sequence tells the story in hindsight; the lesson is to bench-check the sensor when noise-alarms resist a genuinely clean cable job.
