Haas machines make backups easy — which makes it doubly painful when a shop loses settings, offsets and macros to a dead battery with no backup on file. Ten minutes with a USB stick prevents it. Here is the routine for both control generations.
Part 1 — Take a full backup (do this first)
Next Generation Control (NGC)
- Insert a USB stick (FAT32) into the control's USB port.
- Press [LIST PROGRAM] and select the System / backup function (Backup Machine).
- Select everything — programs, settings, offsets, macro variables, parameters — and execute. The control writes a dated backup set to USB.
Classic Haas control
- Insert the USB stick.
- Back up programs: [LIST PROG], select programs (or ALL) and save to USB (F2 save function).
- Back up settings & parameters: from the Settings/Param pages use the save-to-USB function so you have SETTINGS and PARAM files on the stick.
- Note tool/work offsets and macro variables (these can also be saved from their pages).
Part 2 — Replace the control battery
Haas controls use a lithium backup battery on the processor assembly to hold memory when powered off. A low-battery alarm/message means act now — typically the battery still has limited reserve once the warning appears.
- Take the full backup above first. This is non-negotiable.
- Order the correct battery for your control generation (check the battery marking on your processor assembly before ordering).
- Follow the with-power procedure recommended for your control to avoid memory loss during the swap, or accept a restore-from-backup after a powered-off swap.
- After replacement, verify settings, offsets and macros against your backup — restore from USB if anything cleared.
