Haas machines reference with a POWER UP / ZERO RET cycle at every start (Classic Haas Control) or automatically on NGC machines with absolute encoders. After replacing a servo motor, encoder or the control battery — or after alarms like 143 (Z-axis motor position error) or ZERO RET margin errors — you may also need to re-set the grid offset so the axis zeroes at exactly the right spot. Here is the full procedure.
Normal zero return (Classic Haas Control)
- At power-up, press POWER UP / RESTART (older: ZERO RET → ALL). The machine homes Z first, then X and Y, tool changer and pallet as configured.
- To home a single axis: ZERO RET mode → select axis → SINGL AXIS.
- The axis moves to its home switch, backs off, and stops at the encoder Z-pulse. DIST TO GO should show zero and the axis letter stops flashing.
When do you need to set grid offset?
The grid offset tells the control where the encoder's Z-pulse sits relative to the home switch. Set it whenever you have:
- Replaced or re-coupled a servo motor or encoder (motor replacement guide)
- Alarm 'ZERO RET MARGIN TOO SMALL' — the switch trips too close to the Z-pulse
- Home position visibly wrong (tool change position off, pallet misaligned)
Setting the grid offset
- Enter the debug/parameter mode: press PARAM DGNOS, key in the service password if set (Setting 7 parameter lock OFF first).
- Zero-return the axis with SINGL AXIS. On the DGNOS page note the DIST Z CH value (distance from switch release to Z-channel pulse) in encoder steps.
- The target is roughly half an electrical revolution (for most Haas encoders: 4096 steps of the 8192-step rev). Compute: new grid offset = current parameter value + (DIST Z CH − 4096).
- Enter the value in the axis GRID OFFSET parameter (Parameter 125/126/127… X/Y/Z on classic controls; on NGC use the Grid Offset field under Diagnostics → Axes).
- Zero-return the axis again and confirm DIST Z CH now reads near 4096 and no margin alarm appears.
- Verify tool-change position (Z) with parameter 64 (TOOL CHANGE OFFSET) unchanged — if the spindle no longer aligns with the carousel, the grid moved a full pulse: re-check the math before touching Parameter 64.
Common problems
- Axis hunts or overshoots during zero return — home switch sticky or cable damaged; check switch state on the I/O diagnostics page while pressing it by hand.
- Alarm 143 / motor position error right after homing — encoder coupling slipping or encoder failing; see our encoder replacement guide.
- Machine loses home after every power cycle (NGC) — motor absolute battery pack low; replace and re-home once.
- ZERO RET MARGIN TOO SMALL keeps returning — the switch bracket has moved; re-position the switch, then set grid offset again.
